Thinking in terms of system hierarchies and velocities . What makes development sustainable ?

In order to understand the context for sustainable development policies it is necessary to understand the different rates of evolution and velocities of change within social and ecological systems. These different rates of change are important for the interaction and co-evolution of these systems. Only when we understand the sustainable development of not only separate, interdependent or nested systems in a global hierarchy, but their very different but interrelated rates and paths of development and evolution, will sustainable development policy be fruitful. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
